Reintroducing the Franklin Debate Society

Reviving a tradition of reasoned debate, 200 years in the making.

Once central to the intellectual life of Rockbridge County, Virginia, the Franklin Society shaped generations through serious debate and civil discourse. Founded in 1800 and chartered in 1816, it debated the great political, religious, and moral questions of its day before dissolving in 1891.

Now, on the eve of America’s 250th birthday, The Generals Redoubt is proud to bring the Franklin Society back—renewing a tradition of reasoned argument and respectful disagreement. No membership fees. No fines for missing meetings. But a renewed commitment to civil discourse, intellectual rigor, and respect for serious debate. Meetings will be held at our historic headquarters at Fancy Hill, around town, and with partner organizations.
