September Faculty Dinner
Join us on Sunday, September 6th at 5:30 PM for a Faculty Dinner at Fancy Hill.
Faculty from Washington and Lee and neighboring institutions are invited to spend an evening at one of Rockbridge County's most historic homes. Guests will have the opportunity to learn about the history of Fancy Hill, connect with colleagues across departments and institutions, share ideas over dinner, and enjoy meaningful conversation in a relaxed setting.
Dinner will be provided, and members of The Generals Redoubt will be available to share more about our mission of fostering civil discourse, intellectual curiosity, and community engagement.

9/11 Memorial
Join us as we Remember & Honor those whose lives were lost on September 11, 2001.
On September 10 at 6 PM, volunteers are invited to help place 2,977 American flags on the Colonnade, one for each victim of the attacks. On September 11 at 5 PM, we will gather for a memorial service to reflect, remember, and honor their legacy, including Washington and Lee alumni Rob Schlegel ('86) and James Gadiel ('00'), who lost their lives that day. The memorial includes an interfaith prayer, a moment of silence, remarks from student leaders, and singing from University Singers.
This annual tradition brings our campus community together in remembrance and gratitude, reaffirming the values of service, unity, and patriotism.
This event is sponsored by the College Republicans, College Democrats, and The Generals Redoubt. We encourage all members of the W&L community to join us as we honor those we lost and ensure their memory endures.

DEBATE: “Is the American Dream no longer attainable in modern-day America?”
Join us on Sunday, September 13th at 5:30 PM for the first Franklin Society Debate of the semester at Fancy Hill.
The Franklin Society brings together students from across campus for civil, substantive conversations on today's most important issues. This month's discussion will explore the question: "Is the American Dream no longer attainable in modern-day America?"
Whether you have strong opinions or simply want to listen and learn, all perspectives are welcome. Dinner will be provided, and transportation to and from Fancy Hill will be available for students.

Locke-ing & Un-Locke-ing the Declaration of Independence
Join us on Friday, October 2nd at 4:30 PM in Northen Auditorium (located inside Leyburn Library) for a special lecture with Dr. Lynn Uzzell, Associate Professor of Political Science at Bethel University.
In her presentation, "Locke-ing & Un-Locke-ing the Declaration of Independence," Dr. Uzzell will examine the philosophy of revolution expressed in the Declaration of Independence, exploring Thomas Jefferson's ideas and tracing their intellectual roots to John Locke and other influential thinkers.
Whether you're interested in American political thought, constitutional principles, history, or just hearing another fantastic lecture from Professor Uzzell, this program offers an engaging opportunity to explore the ideas that shaped the nation's founding.
Presented by The Spectator, The Generals Redoubt, and the W&L Law Federalist Society, this event is open to all members of the W&L community. We hope you'll join us for an afternoon of thoughtful discussion and intellectual engagement.

The Franklin Society is dedicated to fostering thoughtful, civil dialogue on important issues affecting our campus and society. This month's discussion will consider the question: "Should Washington and Lee adopt a multi-tiered honor system?"
Honor has long been a defining feature of the Washington and Lee experience, and this debate will provide an opportunity for students to explore different perspectives on the future of the Honor System in a respectful, open forum. Whether you plan to speak or simply listen, all members of the community are welcome.

This timely discussion will examine the United States' role in international affairs, encouraging participants to consider competing perspectives on foreign policy, national security, and global leadership. Whether you plan to participate in the debate or simply listen, all viewpoints are welcome in an atmosphere of civil discourse.

The Spectator Presents: Michael Knowles
The conservative commentator will discuss traditional values during his on-campus speech.

The W&L Spectator and College Republicans are proud to present conservative commentator Michael Knowles in Evans Hall at 7:00 PM on September 16, 2024.
Knowles is best known for his Daily Wire podcast, The Michael Knowles Show. He joined the platform in 2016, beginning as a guest on The Andrew Klavan Show before starting his own podcast.
He is a practicing Catholic, which significantly informs his views. In 2021, Knowles authored a book, Speechless: Controlling Words, Controlling Minds, which discussed the history of free speech policy and modern free speech advocacy.
His speech, titled “Kamala Wants You Single,” will explore the tension between traditional and modern values surrounding families and dating. Tickets for the event may be found here.
