REMEMBERING HISTORY

Plaques Removed from W&L’s Campus

For generations, plaques across Washington and Lee's campus commemorated the people and events that shaped the school's identity. In recent years, university officials have removed at least thirty of those memorials, fundamentally damaging the institution's historic landscape. We have created this archive to ensure these markers, and the individuals they commemorate, are not forgotten. Here, we document each plaque's history — its inscription, origin, location, purpose, and, on limited occasions, where it was reinstalled. Click the plaques below to learn more, and please contact us if you know of any other memorials that have disappeared from campus.
