Yes, we encourage students, from W&L, VMI, SVU, or other nearby institutions to utilize our spaces for studying, group projects/meetings, and exams. We have worked with a student advisory committee to offer a variety of spaces throughout the office and main house which accommodate academic use.
Spaces include a podcasting studio, a 10-person conference room, several small-group workspaces, a sunroom lounge, and two parlors.
Students who wish to work here must abide by our Fancy Hill Use Guidelines, and agree to act in accordance with the Honor System. -
Fancy Hill will serve as the permanent Headquarters of The Generals Redoubt, showing our strong commitment to defending our alma mater. Fancy Hill will also serve as a center for student and alumni engagement, a space to host Founders Day celebrations, historic events, and academic programs. We are only just beginning to see this home’s potential, and we welcome your suggestions.

The first portion of Fancy Hill — the South-most side — was built in 1821. However, an earlier structure stood on site as early as the 1780s. Over time, in 1831, 1840, and 1936, the home grew into the building we recognize today.
The Redoubt modernized the home in 2024 with central heating and air, new plumbing, and improved electrical capacity. We also installed a porch lift and elevator to support guest accessibility.

The best way to learn is by visiting and getting a tour of this remarkable home.
For those unable to see the site in person, we are working on producing additional written and digital material about the home’s 200+ year history. Please stay tuned!

Most of the house is now finished, and open to guests by appointment (see the above form to request a visit). The basement tavern and library is still under renovation, with an expected completion by the end of 2025.
Beyond the main house, we have ongoing landscaping projects and general repairs. These should not affect the aesthetic and visting hours of Fancy Hill. -
Fancy Hill has multiple bedrooms, which are staged to represent various eras of the home’s history.
While these bedrooms are functional, they are not available for guest lodging at this time.
